GWO plugin for WordPress: beta version released
This beta release plugin is no longer supported. Use the new version instead The GWO WordPress plugin
As the title says this is a plugin to integrate Google Website Optimizer with WordPress.
You don’t have to change anything in your WordPress files or templates to get this plugin to work. Every page and post can be made into either a testpage(landingpage) or a goal(conversionpage) with a click of a button. You want a link click to be a conversion? Just click the conversion link menu button and it is.
Setup
After you have uploaded and activated the plugin You find it under the “Settings” menu.
When you click on the GWO plugin link you come to the global settings screen.
If you already now your GWO account id you can write it in the designated field.
If you don’t know it create a test in the GWO account you plan to use later and and then copy the tracking code you get in step 2 in the designated text area. And when you click save the account id is extracted and saved.
Creating test and goal pages
When you get to the Add new (page/post) screen you find two new icons in the menu.
. The [ ] icon is used for making “Page sections”. You can insert them and then add then add stuff between the tags or you can select a portion of the text and then click the icon and the tags will wrap around the selection.
The icon on the left in the image
is used for marking a link as a conversion link. When the link is clicked a person has converted.
To make a link a “Conversion link” you need to click it in the text area then the icon is activated
and can be clicked. Currently it is the same icon for both adding and removing “Conversion link” from a link. So keep track of which links are conversion links.

You also find a new area called GWO on the “Add new” page.
To activate GWO you need to enable it. Then you need to add the id of the test. It is a number found in the tracking script just as with the account id (XXXXXXXXXX/test add only the number).
If the current page is Goal page that is when people reach this page they have been converted check the box. So make sure you don’t check the box on your test page (landingpage).
If you use a link as a conversion you need to check the “page uses …” box otherwise it will not work. Make sure that you have not checked the “This is a GWO goalpage” box also. It is either or at the moment, gonna change to radioboxes in next version.
Known problems
- “Page sections”: sometimes the h1,p tags etc are not surrounded with the section code. Check in HTML view if this is the case and change it. P tags are due to how TinyMCE works
- Extract testing id from tracking script
Next version 09.06 Beta
- Fix extract and surround (except for P)
- Use radiobuttons instead of checkboxes when adding test to page/post
- Finish titletesting feature
Later versions
- Include widget support
- Add support for multiple tests having same goalpage
- Add support for global test
- Add support for having two test on same page. For example both widget and main content.
Download version 09.05 Beta
Don’t forget to add feedback and all that.
